Thanks to the success of the class reunion and alumni dues support, we were able to increase the amount of our scholarship from $500 to $1000.
The recipient of the 2017 award went to Peter Sileo, grandson of Peter and Alice Gomez Sileo.
The 2018 award was given to Jessica Nimmo daughter of Christine Bourke Nimmo and the late Brian Nimmo.
The 2019 award was given to Lauren Sileo granddaughter of Peter and Alice Gomez Sileo.
The criteria for the scholarship submission is “What growing up in the community has meant to me” and “What influence has the family member alumnus of Washingtonville had on me.” The selection process is anonymous with only the president knowing who the candidates are. Each essay is read out loud by the president and the committee votes on a sliding scale. Also included in the submission is the student’s GPA, their community service and their letters of recommendations from guidance and faculty. In 2018 there were 11 applicants. In 2019 there were 7 applicants.
The 2020 Scholarship Award went to Ryan Sliwinski.
In 2021, it was decided to award two scholarships: the recipients were Samantha Soehnlein and Kaitlyn Heins.
After the 2010 Multi Year Reunion, the Alumni Association was organized and incorporated as a 501 c3 Not for Profit entity . The profit realized from the reunion was the seed money to establish the Washingtonville Alumni Association Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a Washingtonville graduate who has attended the school from grade 6 through 12. To be eligible the student must be a child or grandchild of a Washingtonville High School graduate and accepted to any two/four year college or trade school. The candidate submits an essay choosing between two topics – “What growing up in the community has meant to me” or “What influence has the family member alumni of Washingtonville had on me.” A copy of the college acceptance letter and two faculty recommendations are also required. The selection of the awardee is a blind process by the members of the alumni board.
The scholarship has been sustained by the generosity of Washingtonville Alumni via dues paid either yearly – $10 or $25 for three years.
Payment for dues can be made to the Washingtonville Alumni Association c/o Rose VanRegenmortel 11 North Street Washingtonville NY 10992. Please be sure to put your grad year on your check. Dues are tax deductible.
The Washingtonville Alumni committee will begin working to organize another All Year Class Reunion. Watch our FaceBook page for details and how to become involved.
The last multi year reunion was held in 2010 at the former Brookside Manor. There were over 400 alumni in attendance from the Class of ’40 to ’70 at that event which was a sit down dinner. The experience left a lot of people not happy. Food came late, food was cold, sound system was terrible. One was left to remain at their designated table waiting for food and not able to socialize with others.
In making plans for the 2016 reunion, it was decided that no indoor venue would be able to accommodate the numbers the committee wanted to include this time around hence the decision to hold the event at Thomas Bull Memorial Park/Orange County Park.
The date was Saturday, August 6, 2016 from 1 PM to 6 PM. Jim Loughran was hired to cater the reunion and his menu was amazing!! There was music and lots of time for gathering together and catching up! Everyone had a great time reconnecting!
The milestones keep coming……..time to come together again soon….time to celebrate!!
2022 – The next Multi Year Reunion is coming Saturday, August 13 from 3-8 PM. The venue is the Otterkill Country Club in Campbell Hall.
